Haiti Earthquake Relief Update – March 2022

St. Gabriel’s Parish (and the former Holy Angels Parish) has been in a twinning relationship with St. Anne Parish in Sucreri Henry, Haiti for 20 years. The church is the hub of the community and also hosts a K-12 school, vocational school and medical clinic. On August 14, 2021, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake destroying or severely damaging all of the buildings at St. Anne’s. Several of the buildings have been demolished, and, sadly, the church itself will need to be demolished too. Plans for rebuilding are underway.

Within days of the earthquake, our parish was able to respond to some of the needs of our Haitian sisters and brothers by wiring $25,000 from the emergency reserves in our Haiti Fund to St. Anne. This money allowed Pastor Père Didier to support his parishioners with critical food, water, and tarps and tents for shelter. It also enabled the parish to construct a semi-permanent structure to provide shade and protection from the elements. The structure, as seen in these photos, is being used for Masses, community gatherings and some school classes.

We are glad St. Anne parish has been able to come together for worship, community, and learning in this space. We are especially grateful that the parish has a place to gather during this season of Lent. Thank you to all who have supported and continue to support our ministry.
