Congratulations YAM Flag Design Winner!

I am so happy to announce that the flag designed by Thomas Michel for Youth Art Month has been selected by the Massachusetts Art Education Association as the Flag Design Winner at the Elementary Level! Thomas is a fifth grade student at Miscoe Hill school in Mendon. There were just three flag designs selected from all of the entries statewide. One design was selected for each of the grades levels: 9-12, 6-8, and K-5. Thomas’s entry was selected as the K-5 winner. The winning 9-12 flag design will hang at the National Art Education Association Convention in San Diego from March 28 – April 1. You may see the three winning designs here.

When Thomas designed his flag entry he included a ship because he knew the flag would hang in San Diego, where there is a large Navy base. He also included a drawbridge because it is an art contest. Get it? “D-R-A-W-bridge”? Very clever, Thomas!

Here is his award winning design:

While 250 students in my 5/6 art classes completed flag designs for this contest, I selected just five to submit to the Massachusetts Art Education Association, which was a torturous process. I would like to congratulate the other four artists on a job well done. Here are the other entries:

Congratulations to all of these young artists for their hard work and creativity!

There will more more information published about Youth Art Month later this week. Stay tuned!
